Reference: Final date for application: The Junior Programme, executed by Enabel, offers the opportunity for talented young people of various origin, gender and education backgrounds to contribute professionally to international solidarity projects. Through their experience they develop the competences to actively and sustainably engage in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The Junior Programme aims to make them active and critical global citizens who are committed to the SDGs.

The Junior Experts work at least 1 and at most 2 years in a project of Enabel or of one of the Non-governmental Actors (NGA) that are affiliated with the Junior Programme.

The Programme Junior only accepts young people aged 30 at most.

Context

The rice sector in Uganda is characterised by low productivity, excessive use of chemical inputs, lack of infrastructure and application of practices that contribute to environmental impacts. The expansion of rice production by small-holder rice farmers over the last 15 years has led to significant parts of wetlands in Eastern and Northern Uganda being converted into paddy fields, resulting in greenhouse gas, water and biodiversity stress.

The Rikolto project wants to ensure that the rice sector in Uganda is more resilient, sustainable and inclusive, providing a living income for producers and agri-business entrepreneurs, including women and youth, while increasing the availability of sustainably produced food products on the market and reducing the environmental impacts.

The project wants to increase crop productivity in a sustainable way, to enhance farmer access to markets by influencing the eating habits of consumers and to influence public and profit sector policy in favour of sustainable production and consumption.

Function

The Junior Expert will design and develop effective project communication strategies and materials; These will particularly focus on the project evidence and on influencing consumers' preference to consume healthy rice in collaboration with rice processors and retailers under the "Healthy Rice Initiative".

Profile

Required training/degree (eliminatory on CV): Master or Professional Bachelor’s Degree

Communication/Public Realtions/Journalism
Preferred assets (not eliminatory on CV):

Able to work creatively in low resource/skill environments
Be creative and able to translate jargon programme information into and accessible format (language, visuals, etc)
Able to motivate and inspire team members
Language skills:

English: fluency, both written and oral
Luganda: an asset
French: basic knowledge (level A2)
Dutch: basic knowledge (level A2)

Only candidates who meet the following prerequisite admission criteria by 23 March 2023 can apply: 1. Hold Belgian nationality or be a citizen of a member state of the European Economic Union or the Swiss Confederation.

2. Born after 23rd March 1992.

3. Able to deliver an extract from their criminal record to prove their behaviour in accordance with the requirements of the job and enjoying full civil and political rights.
