Who is Learning Alliance:
Learning Alliance is an international NGO that partners with districts and primary schools in Uganda to simplify teaching and increase learning. Our mission is to help every student master the basic literacy skills they need to be successful at school. We provide teachers with step-by-step daily lesson plans to teach English language reading and writing using phonics. The core of our program is the support that we offer teachers through our Learning Alliance Teacher Coaches: Our coaches train teachers on how to use the phonics lesson plans, and then regularly visit classrooms of each teacher to observe and provide mentorship and advice. Our coaches help teachers try out new approaches and instructional routines which are fun and effective, making classrooms a place of joyful learning for students and teachers.
Learning Alliance is growing fast! In 2026, we worked with 20,000 pupils. In 2027, we aim to double in size, working with 40,000 pupils in Iganga and Mayuge. As we grow in the coming years, we anticipate generating lots of new roles for Teacher Coaches, as well as promoting from within, such that Teacher Coaches could eventually become District Managers or grow into other roles. We aim to hire people who share our organizational values and are excited to join our team in the early days of our organization.
Teacher Coach Job Responsibilities:
The Teacher Coach is the frontline implementer of our program. You will be assigned to support 10-15 primary schools, with your main role being to train teachers on our phonics curriculum, and then to observe their teaching and mentor them.
Main responsibilities:
- Train teachers (10%): Run trainings for groups of teachers on using our phonics curriculum and deploying new teaching practices. We will provide you with a script for
this training, with a focus on ensuring that the training is motivating and interactive, and that every teacher leaves with mastery of the material.
- Observe and Mentor Teachers, with a relationship-driven focus (75%): You will spend most of your time here, visiting 1-2 schools each day and observing the lessons. An observation includes watching a teacher’s lesson for 30-45 minutes, completing an observation form on your phone, and discussing your observations with the teacher after class. You may also run quick assessments with a few students to see if they mastered that day’s material. You will focus your visit on building a positive relationship with your teachers, prioritizing advice for them to improve their teaching, and practicing together on how to deliver effective lessons.
Additional responsibilities:
- Maintain School Relationship, and Enroll New Schools During Expansion (5%): Work with Learning Alliance leadership to enroll 8-15 schools in the program and maintain the relationship with them. This includes building and maintaining relationships with the head teacher and other school leaders and district officials, explaining and demonstrating the program, and getting buy-in from teachers (and parents, as appropriate).
- Collect, Track, and Respond to Data (5%): Collect and report KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) to provide quantitative data on how things are going. Examples KPIs include the number of teachers who attend each day of training, or the amount of time it takes a teacher to run a lesson. We will work together each week to identify challenges and successes in the data, and troubleshoot together to improve our approach. In addition, you may be asked to test students’ reading skills in order to assess their progress.
- Program Operations and Other Flexible Responsibilities as Needed (5%): You are responsible for running logistical tasks for the schools you work with, such as distribution of teacher guides, tracking and following up on teacher attendance at your trainings through calls and texts, and solving any transportation issues that arise. You will prepare a weekly work plan to ensure that you are equitably visiting all your schools, while also appropriately prioritizing support to teachers or schools that are struggling. As a small, start-up non-profit, we may occasionally have other tasks shared across our team, which you may be asked to participate in.
- Build Positive Relationships and Mindsets at Schools: On a continuous basis, you are responsible for building positive, supportive relationships with teachers and school leaders, which help them feel motivated to try new teaching techniques. You are also responsible for promoting learning mindsets: the belief that every student can learn if teachers support them effectively, and that the classroom should be a safe and positive space for every child. You can be creative in keeping your teachers motivated, such as through whatsapp groups, sharing video examples of effective teachers, friendly competition among teachers, etc.
Who should apply:

- Skilled classroom teacher, with experience doing interactive activities (I do, we do, you do) and focusing on student mastery of skills. You give good advice to other teachers.
