T he University of Saint Joseph Mbarara (USJM) is seeking a qualified Nurse to join their Dean of Students department. This role is crucial in supporting the University's commitment to holistic education, student wellbeing, and safe learning environments. The Nurse will provide essential healthcare services to students, staff, and the wider community.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Provide nursing care and health support services to students, staff and visitors at USJM.
- Conduct patient assessment, triage and provide appropriate nursing interventions.
- Provide first aid and emergency medical support during agricultural practical activities, fieldwork and University events.
- Attend to injuries, illnesses and health concerns arising from laboratory, farm and outdoor learning activities.
- Monitor and provide follow-up care for students and staff requiring medical attention.
- Administer prescribed medication and treatments in accordance with professional standards.
- Maintain accurate, confidential and up-to-date medical records.
- Provide health education and counselling on hygiene, nutrition, disease prevention and healthy lifestyles.
- Promote occupational health and safety practices among students and staff. Participate in health screening, wellness programmes and preventive healthcare activities.
- Monitor and promote infection prevention and control practices.
- Provide guidance on personal safety, sanitation and environmental health.
- Support management of occupational health risks associated with agricultural training and field activities.
- Maintain proper storage, accountability and management of medicines, medical supplies and first aid equipment.
- Monitor medical supplies and prepare requisitions as required.
- Refer patients to appropriate health facilities for specialised medical care.
- Support health-related community outreach and extension activities of USJM.
- Participate in emergency preparedness and response activities.
- Prepare periodic health reports and submit them to relevant University authorities.
- Collaborate with academic staff, students and other stakeholders to promote a safe and healthy learning environment.
- Maintain professional ethics, confidentiality and respect for patient dignity.
- Keep updated with developments in nursing practice, occupational health and public health.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Head of Department, University Health Officer or relevant authority.
Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants should possess:
- A Diploma or Degree in Nursing from a recognised institution.
- Registration with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC) with a valid practising licence.
- At least two (2) years of relevant nursing experience.
- Evidence of working in an institutional, community health, agricultural, occupational health, Counselling or educational environment will be an added advantage.
- Training in first aid, emergency care, occupational health and safety or public health will be an added advantage.
