Project Manager: Cross-border Migration (Explosive Ordnance Risk Management), South Sudan/Uganda
Fixed Term for c.8 months, until 31 st December 2021.
The starting salary package for this position is £47,004 GBP per annum (approx. 66,500 USD including all allowances)

About the South Sudan programme:
South Sudan is one of the youngest, poorest and least developed countries world-wide and is currently facing multiple crises with devastating impacts for resident and returnee populations. Thousands of people have been killed or wounded over many years of conflict, and hundreds of thousands have been displaced by the violence. MAG has been successfully working in South Sudan since 2004, to clear landmines/unexploded ordnance and deliver mine risk education to at-risk populations in a constantly challenging environment. Building on MAG’s long experience in the country, this pilot project is expected to make a hugely important contribution to supporting the vulnerable women, men, girls and boys to settle safely and to build their lives and generate their livelihoods in safety.
About the role:
With South Sudanese refugees in Uganda currently facing significant cuts to their rations as a result of funding cuts to WFP and UNHCR, the time has never been more right to carry out this cross-border work. More refugees are crossing back and forth to South Sudan in search of food and livelihood opportunities to sustain their families, but have little or no awareness of which areas are contaminated with Explosive Ordnance or how to recognise dangerous items if they are found.
With more refugees likely to move out of Uganda and IDPs within South Sudan likely to move into MAG’s areas of operation, MAG would like to support partners – UNHCR, WFP, NGOs & CSOs on both sides of the border to better understand the landmine situation in several border districts in South Sudan.
This is a significant opportunity for the right Project Manager to lead on a crucial pilot project in our South Sudan programme, aimed at increasing awareness about the mine and explosive ordnance contamination in South Sudan. Reporting to the Technical Operations Manager, the Project Manager will be responsible for leading on the set up and management of the cross-border project. You will work closely with partner organisations in Uganda and relevant authorities to identify and understand the critical explosive ordnance contamination in MAG’s current areas of operation in South Sudan, identify the needs for explosive ordnance risk education (EORE) for South Sudanese refugee communities in Uganda, and bring key informants to the area of operations for follow-on non-technical survey (NTS). You will also work closely with the MAG’s security, technical and community liaison teams in South Sudan to implement and carry out this project. It is envisaged that the role will be split approximately 70/30 South Sudan/Uganda.
The successful candidate will need a minimum of 5 years’ management-level experience working in the humanitarian sector on refugee and cross-border issues, ideally in a conflict / post conflict environment. The candidate should be able to demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimum supervision, as much of this role will be undertaken at a distance from the role manager and support team. Experience managing a full project cycle, including baseline assessment, planning, delivery, reporting and M&E is essential. The candidate should have experience of conducting gender/age appropriate needs or risk assessments in order to design and implement appropriate interventions, as well as in-depth experience of participatory research techniques and community-based and led approaches. The successful candidate will also have proven ability to manage a range of key relationships with host state governments, UN, local authorities and NGOs including Refugee and Women’s organisations.
